Overview
The Louisa Martindale Building is the centre to the Brighton 3Ts redevelopment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, designed to provide cutting-edge healthcare services to over 100,000 patients annually across Brighton and Sussex. 3T’s Phase 1 (Trauma, Tertiary and Teaching ) of the redevelopment is a 13-storey facility which includes critical care units, diagnostic imaging departments, and advanced surgical theatres, with a particular focus on high-demand areas such as neurosciences, stroke services, and intensive care.
DorSuite played a key role in providing more than 2,500 doorsets for this large-scale project, supplying a variety of solutions to meet the specific needs of the building. From lead-lined doors for radiation protection in imaging departments to automatic doors for accessibility, our range of products ensured the hospital met stringent healthcare standards while supporting optimal functionality and patient care.
The Challenge
The Louisa Martindale Building posed several unique challenges due to its size, complexity, and the sensitive nature of its medical environments. DorSuite was tasked with providing doorsets that would not only meet safety and security requirements but also offer durability and ease of maintenance in areas such as operating theatres, intensive care units (ICU), and diagnostic imaging facilities.
The project demanded a diverse range of doors, including fire-rated doors, high-security doors, soundproof doors for clinical areas, and fully encapsulated PVC doors that complied with the latest infection control standards. In addition, the doors had to support the high-volume, high-pressure nature of healthcare operations while remaining easy to operate and maintain.
The DorSuite Solution
In response to the complex demands of the Louisa Martindale Building, DorSuite supplied a comprehensive range of over 2,500 doorsets, each tailored to the specific needs of the project. Our solutions included Armolam HPL doors for general areas, PVC-encapsulated doors for hygiene-sensitive and high traffic areas, and steel doors for high-security zones. Notably, we also supplied 66 lead-lined doorsets to ensure radiation protection for imaging and diagnostic rooms.
The scope of the supply included a full ironmongery and access control package, with 50 fire rated automatic door operators and more than 300 double swing doors. These solutions provided accessibility, safety, and smooth operation across the facility.
Our Expertise
DorSuite’s expertise in delivering high-performance door solutions for the healthcare sector was instrumental in the success of this large-scale project. With our sector-specific knowledge and extensive experience in the delivery of large healthcare projects, we were able to provide tailored door solutions that met the rigorous safety, security, and operational requirements of the hospital.
We worked closely with the project’s lead design teams from BDP, the architectural practice, and Laing O’Rourke, the construction contractor, to ensure that all specifications were met whilst achieving full fire certification and regulatory compliance. Our ability to collaborate effectively with these key partners ensured that DorSuite could deliver the right solutions at every stage of the project.
The Outcome
The completion of Phase 1 of the Louisa Martindale Building has been a significant achievement for the Brighton 3Ts redevelopment, providing the Royal Sussex County Hospital with a modern, efficient healthcare facility. The building now accommodates a wide range of clinical services, including new diagnostic imaging facilities, expanded theatre capacity, and specialist units such as Neurosciences and Stroke Services.
