Project Overview
DorSuite was selected as the door manufacturer for the expansion and refurbishment of the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, contributing to both the Cancer Assessment Unit and the Haematology Centre. This project aimed to enhance patient care through modern, fit-for-purpose facilities, aligning with NHS Lothian’s vision for a world-leading Regional Cancer Centre.
The Cancer Assessment Unit provides an easily accessible, modern environment for patients and staff, while the Haematology Centre supports advanced treatments and research. Both units form part of a wider effort to improve cancer and haematology services within the hospital.
Our Contribution
For this critical project, DorSuite supplied 246 doorsets tailored to the unique demands of healthcare environments. The range included non-fire rated (NFR) doors as well as fire-rated doors up to FD60s. The doors were selected to balance performance, durability, and aesthetics, meeting the stringent requirements of both the Cancer Assessment Unit and the Haematology Centre.
Our offerings featured a variety of solutions:
Impact Suite: Designed to withstand high-impact use in busy hospital settings.
Design Suite: Providing a balance of durability and a welcoming aesthetic.
Audio Suite: Offering acoustic solutions to ensure patient comfort and privacy.
Working closely with Oberlanders Architects and Robertson Construction, we ensured that each doorset met the necessary performance standards and client specifications. A particular challenge was creating doors that were robust enough for healthcare use but maintained a less commercial, more homely appearance. We achieved this by using an Oak Woodgrain PVC finish that provided high-impact protection while offering a softer visual appeal.
Focus on Certification and Compliance
Given the high importance placed on certification by the client, DorSuite ensured that all doorsets and associated hardware met or exceeded the required standards. Our team collaborated with the design and construction teams to provide fully certified solutions, guaranteeing compliance and performance in critical healthcare environments.
Conclusion
DorSuite's involvement in both the Cancer Assessment Unit and the Haematology Centre at Western General Hospital highlights our capability to deliver tailored, certified solutions for complex healthcare environments. Through collaboration and a commitment to sustainability, we have contributed to the creation of state-of-the-art facilities that support advanced patient care and treatment.
